Vienna in the winter

Vienna is always worth a visit – especially in the winter around Christmas time and New Years Eve. In the cold season of the year, all the sights and places of interest are not as crowded as in the summer.

Fall and winter season in Vienna

Both during fall and wintertime, a visit to different parishes of Vienna like “Döbling”, “Grinzing” and “Neustift” is highly recommendable. Here you can experience and get to know real Viennese sociability.
Take the opportunity and ascend to mountains “Kahlenberg” or “Leopoldsberg”, which takes about one hour. From up here you have an amazing outlook over Vienna and the scenery of changing colours of the forest “Wienerwald”. In the winter, you will be impressed by the view over snowed in vineyards and forest “Wienerwald”.

Those of you, who are into winter sports like cross-country skiing, may get the opportunity to take a ride through the hibernal forest “Wienerwald”. However, you need to be a bit lucky with the right weather conditions, since snowfall can not be guaranteed at all times …

But whether in front of Vienna Town Hall or at one of the other ice rinks in the city - ice skating is always possible in the winter. A very special ice skating experience you may find on the frozen Danube River. Instead of ice skating you can also take a warm bath at one of the swimming pools or therms in the city or you have a relaxing day at the sauna.

Christmas markets in Vienna

The Christmas markets (15. 11. – 24. 12.) at “Schönbrunn”, “Belvedere” and in front of the Town hall are very popular - among many other smaller places and squares. Indeed, the Christmas markets in Vienna are the most popular tourist attractions in the winter. Why not trying a hot mulled wine or some delicious chestnuts?

Cultural events in the winter

Go for a Waltz in Vienna! The ball season in Vienna starts in November. Another exciting event in the winter is the “Wiener Silvesterpfad” around the 1. district with many cultural events and the Waltz at midnight. Visit the “Wiener Oper”, “Staatstheater” or one of the smaller venues and theatres in the city – Vienna has got something in store for everyone.
